Uzeir
Hajibeyov is a great composer and a pioneer of
the world music culture of the XX century.
He is one of the first musicians, who could assist
to interaction of two cultures: the western and eastern
ones.
He
was the founder of the new historical way of Azerbaijan
musical culture's development, as well as development
of Azerbaijan composers' school. He was the first
one in many points of Azerbaijani music:
- ancestor of the first Azerbaijan opera, musical
comedy, and other genres;
- specialist in folklore;
- great musician-scientist;
- originator of new tune theory, not only for Azerbaijan
music, but for the East in the whole;
- pioneer in many areas;
- publicist;
- author of satirical articles;
- librettist;
- dramatist;
- public figure;
- creator of the first eastern theater;
- creator of the first eastern Conservatoire.
The
essential dates of his life:
September 18, 1885 - birth in Agjabedi village, near
Shusha.
1899 - 1904 - education in Gori seminary.
1905 - arrival in Baku, start of journalist
activity.
1907 - edition of the Russian-Tatar and Tatar-Russian
Dictionary of political, juridical, military, and
other terminology.
1907 - creation of the first Azerbaijan and
really eastern opera "Leyli and Mejnun" (based on
Fizuli's poem "Leyli and Mejnun")
1908 - (January, 25) premiere of the "Leyli
& Mejnun" opera
1909 - creation and premiere of the "Sheikh
Sanan" opera
1909 -1910 - creation and premiere of the musical
"Husband and Wife"
1910 - opera "Rustam and Zohrab"
1910-1911 - musical "If not This One, then
the Other One"
1912 - opera "Shakh Abbas and Khurshid Banu"
1912 - opera "Asli and Kerem"
1912-1913 - Education in Moscow at private

1921 - issue of the article "Musical-enlightener
Objectives in Azerbaijan". This article was a kind
of program to develop musical culture in Azerbaijan.
Musical-aesthetical thesis on necessity to interrelate
between western and eastern musical cultures was formed
just in this article for the first time.
1921, August - Uzeir Hajibeyov originated Azerbaijan
State Conservatoire according to his written
report-charter.
1922
- creation of the Turkic musical school assigned for
Azerbaijan students.
1925 - started working at his book "Principles
of Azerbaijani Folk music"
1927 - jointly with Muslim Magomayev he issued
the first anthology of Azerbaijani folk songs
1921-1928 - teaching activity in Azerbaijan State
Conservatoire (disciplines: to play on the tar from
music, and Principles of Azerbaijani folk music)
1928 - initiated and organized the 1-st Congress
of Azerbaijan ashugs.
Late 20th - early 30th - creation of the 1-st
marsh songs ("Komsomol member," "Red army march,"
etc.)
1931 - initiated the first
Azerbaijan Orchestra of folk instruments (playing
from music)
1931 - creation of first works for this orchestra:
(1-st and 2-nd Fantasies.)
30th years - creation of first Azerbaijan cantatas
(including those, devoted to 1000-year anniversary
of Firdowsy), a piece for violin, cello, piano, "Ashig
sayagi"
1932-1936 - creation of the opera "Koroglu"
1937, April - premiere of the opera "Koroglu"
1938 - opera "Koroglu" and musical "Arshin
Mal Alan" on the stage of the "Bolshoi Theater" (10-Days
of Azerbaijan Arts in Moscow).
1938 - awarded the Honored Title of People's
Artist of the USSR.
1939 -1948 - Rector
of Azerbaijan State Conservatoire, and Chairman
of the Composers' Union.
1941-1945 - creation of: romances, ..gazels
"Without you" and "Sweetheart" ..to
Nizami's words, cantata "Motherland and
front," heroic and patriotic songs "Farewell," "Nurse,"
and "Mother's Farewell to Son," etc., the piece "Jangi"
for folk instruments orchestra, plans of creation
"Babek" and "Firuza" operas.
1944, December - one of the Heads and participants
of "10-Days of Trans-Caucasus music" in Tbilisi.
1945 - creation of Azerbaijan national anthem
1945 - publication of his book "Principles
of Azerbaijani Folk Music"
1948, November 22, Uzeir Hajibeyov deceased.
Azerbaijan
State Conservatoire, Azerbaijan Symphony Orchestra,
and one of the central streets of Baku were named
after him. Hajibeyov's House-Museum is functioning
in Baku.
